The New York Knicks and what they should do this upcoming season.
First and foremost, anyone knows me knows i am sports junky majoring in analysis of salary caps and CBA’s, I’ll spend hours reading the nfl, nba, and mlb CBA’s for no reason other than I enjoy these types of things. Now that I’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about my Knicks.
One of the major sticking points in the new CBA is the amnesty clause, which allows a team to cut any player AT ANYTIME DURING THE CBA without a cap penalty. Analysts and Knicks fans alike are suggesting we cut Renalado Balkman who stands to make somewhere around 4 million in this season and the next combined. To use the amnesty clause on him would be foolish on all accounts. His 2 million dollar cap WILL NOT affect any of our plans for the 2012 off season party. To use the clause on him will be tantamount to being offered full retail on returning any item in your house and opting to return a cheap tupperware set. Alas this has grown to be the problem of the Knicks fans, our vision has become so debilitatingly short sided that we struggle with decisions that should be clear as day.
As for moves to be made this season, I fully expect the Knicks to offer Kurt Thomas the veteran’s minimum and wait to see if chicago will outbid or match out offer. The interesting thing about that is the fact that the “Derrick Rose” rule could partially handcuff chicago in their pursuit to resign Thomas (The Rose rule allows for teams to give All stars/MVP’s up to 3 million dollar pay raises if they’re still on their rookie contract) I also expect the Knicks to make a run at players who get waived due to the amnesty clause. Players like, Baron Davis, Brandon Roy and possibly Mike Miller.
All in all Knicks fans, enjoy this upcoming season, cheer hard and true like always but if the Knicks manage to do absolutely nothing in this upcoming shortened off season, NOBODY PANIC.
